Coverlines i will be using

Coverlines i will be using
The coverlines which will be apearing on my magazine cover are as follow:

Dyslexia - which one of us has it?
20 ways to beat your winter blues!
NUS student discounts - its still not too late to get one!
25th Issue! wyke achieve is proud to celebrate its 25th issue!

I have chosen to use only 4 story lines on my cover as i do not want to make the page seem cluttered but i picked the 4 best articles to go on the cover to attract attention. i also want the reader to be able to see the photo clearly. i will however feature more articles on the contents page. I also chose these 4 cover lines as my magazine does not have a set theme so the subject of my cover lines have to be varied.

Sell line

I have named my magazine 'Wyke Achieve' therefore i will need a sell-line (which i will preferably put underneath the masthead) that goes well with the name. So i decided to use either 'The ability to achieve' or 'achieve to your potential' as these fit the name well and also shows what the magazine is about. I decided my magazine would not have a certain theme such as fashion or sport so the sell line should fit to all subjects. Both of my ideas do this. I have decided to use 'The ability to achieve' as my sell line as i think it sounds better and has a good ring to it.

Masthead font idea's

Masthead: Ideas and Analysis
These are the three fonts which i am going to decide between to find which one fits my magazine best.

My first font is very similar to the font used on the masthead for ''VOGUE'' i used this as it stands out and because of the upper case used i feel it showed importance which i would like my magazine to portray. however if i chose to use this font it may make my magazine seem fashion related as the masthead would be very similar to ''VOGUE'' for this reason i chose not to use this font.

My second font is 'fun' and will stand out from the background. it will also catch the readers eye. It is simple yet eye pleasing so is what i wanted for my masthead. it is also not too bold so is not to take up much sace but still bold enough to attract the readers eye.

My third font is fancy and will make the magazine look elegant and seem proffesional and well put together. This would be a good font to use becauseit gives the magazine a good reputation. however i do not know if it would be suitable for my magazine as i wanted to masthead to be nice and plain but to still attract the readers attention.

I have decided to use my second font idea.

Magazine name

I have chosen to call my magazine 'Wyke Achieve' as i would like my college magazine to be aimed at all the students at Wyke instead of just at a minority of people who took a certain subject like sport for example. This name fits well.

LIIAR Analysis Of Existing College Magazines

Grimsby Institute Magazine

This is the college magazine for grimsby institute.  It is named 'GX magazine'

Language
the masthead is nice and simple but is still effective as it is short and easily recognisable. the masthead has been made white to contrast with the blue background. it is also in bold to stand out more. however the decision to use white for the masthead could have been considered a little more as the white is difficult to read over the skin tone. The choice of image used is very simple and work well with each other. the magazine is also not aimed at one gender as it has both a male and a female on the cover. The use and placement of the website works well as it is in the middle of the cover so attracts the readers attention. The use of grey for the writing works well as it stands out from the white background making it look bold and easily readable. however the use of the colour blue for the cover lines does not work well against the grey background as it is difficult to read. A darker colour blue should have been used as it could stand out more and make the reader take interest whereas when it is not easy to read the interest is lost.

Institution

Grimsby institute consists of 1.350 members of staff and over 22,500 students. the college is a further education college and focus' mainly on vocational qualifications. It has the largest number of vocational courses in North East Lincolnshire. The institute also offers apprenticeships for 16-24 year olds.

Ideology
The people featured on the magazine cover do not have faces this highlights no age allowance which shows the college is open to a wide age range of people.

Audience
The magazine appeals to both genders as both genders are shown on the front cover. it apeals to studenst aged 16-19 as the majority of students attending are doing full time education but part time courses are also available for adults so should apeal to this majority as well.

Representation
The image chosen shows a relaxed atmosphere. this will appeal to the audience because it makes the college come across as a relax place. A different sort of image is portrayed in the slogan (''the word on the street'') than it would be in a college such as Wyke. for example ''the word on the street'' makes the college sound talked about so makes it sound popular but also open to a wide range of people. Also the word ''street' is not usually associated with a college.

East Riding College Magazine
This is the college magazine for East Riding College. It is name 'Student Life'

Language
The masthead is very plain but nice and clear so is easily readable as is the rest of the writing on the cover. The colour was also chosen wisely as it creates contrast with the black background and looks very good and clear. However using the same two colours for the rest of the magazine was not such a good idea because it makes it very bland and nothing on the cover is eye catching.  i also thing the image chosen is not very suitable for a magazine cover as it is unclear who is in the photo, whether it is male or female orientated and why the photo has been used. It only becomes apparent after the cation is read.

Institute
The institute for this magazine is East Riding College. The college has campuses based in places all over East Riding such as Hull, Beverley and Bridlington. East riding college offers a range of full time courses aged 16-18 and has over 1,500 students a year.

Ideology
East riding college is an ambitious college as it is wanting to improve the standard of teaching they provide and also the standard of the campuses their students come to.

Audience
The college is aimed at students doing full time courses so are aged 16-19. however there is also a minority of students doing part time courses wanted to get into education who are over 19. The magazine could also appeal to them.

Representation
The image represents a college which is open to a wide range of students from places all over east riding as they have campuses in many places. From the cover i can tell that the college has a very big and successful media department as media is mentioned on the cover. It also shows they are proud of this as they have put it on the front cover and have made the main cover line about it.

Analysis of the brief

Language
I have been looking at several college magazines and have noticed some connotations which i should use. The connotations i will use in my college magazine are; a masthead, cover lines, taglines and a photograph which is a medium close up. these have been on all the magazines i have so far looked at.

Institute
The institute i am doing my magazine about is Wyke College. I have decided that the institute is about wyke college because i attend wyke college myself so i know alot more about it than other colleges. Wyke has over 1300 students attending so this means i have a large target audience.

Ideology
Wyke college has the ideology of respect to all, equal opportunity to all and no bad behaviour tolerated. Wyke college also likes to come across that they like to help there students gain more prospects from life. Hard work is rewarded at wyke so this should come across in my magazine. This also needs to be easily recognised so wyke students are aware of the ideology.

Audience
Most college magazines are aimed at the students who attend the college but occasionally can be aimed at the parents and other people. Wyke college is a sixth form college so the students are aged 16-19. I have decided this will be my target audience. 65% of the students which attend wyke college are female therefore my magazine will be aimed towards females.

Representation
The photograph i choose to use on the front of my college magazine needs to be suitable for the current students and also future students to relate to. This means the photograph i choose cannot give a bad representation of the college therefore i will have to decide carefully about which photograph to use as this will be the first thing the readers see's when they look at the magazine. i also need my coverlines to be interesting and exciting so the reader does not loose interest before they have even open the magazine.

Outlining the brief - College Magazine

Produce the front cover and contents page of a new college magazine using DTP and an image manipulation program. The magazine's front cover should feature a medium close up shot of a student and also must have a masthead and for the text to be laid out correctly and appropriately. I must also made a mock up of the contents page using DTP to show i am able to use it. I will also be analysing other college magazines to see what is expected of a college magazine, how it is traditionally set out and what the conventions are. This will help me come up with my own idea’s about how I would like my college magazine to look and come across.
